Contents
This policy is a draft for review. It describes the current version of the Conversant app, and will be finalized before the app is released.
The short version
Conversant has no accounts, shows no advertising, and contains no analytics or tracking code. What you read, hear, and answer stays on your iPhone. We do not sell or share personal information. If you write to us, we use your message only to reply.
1Who we are
Conversant is published by Conversant App LLC, a Rhode Island limited liability company (“Conversant,” “we,” or “us”). This policy explains what information the Conversant iPhone app and the website at conversantapp.com handle, and why. If anything in it is unclear, write to hello@conversantapp.com.
2What stays on your iPhone
Your reading and listening progress, bookmarks, answers to knowledge checks, review cards, and settings are stored only on your device. We never receive them.
Because they live on your iPhone, they are included in your own iPhone backups, in iCloud or on your computer, if you make them, and they return when you restore one. Deleting the app deletes them.
3Lessons and narration
The text and images of every lesson are built into the app, so reading never needs a connection. Narration downloads the first time you listen to a lesson, or when you choose to download a pathway. These downloads come from Apple’s servers through the App Store and are handled under Apple’s privacy policy. We do not receive information about who downloaded what.
4Links to other websites
Some lessons list their sources with links. Opening one takes you to that website in your browser, where its own privacy practices apply. Apart from narration downloads, the current version of the app loads nothing from the internet.
5Purchases and subscriptions
To confirm: this section takes effect when purchases become available in the app.
Conversant offers subscriptions and other purchases through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes every payment. We never see your name, payment card, or Apple Account details.
To confirm which purchases you have made and to unlock the library on your devices, we use RevenueCat, Inc., a subscription service provider. When you open the app or make a purchase, RevenueCat receives:
- an anonymous identifier created by the app, which is not linked to your name, email address, or Apple Account;
- your purchase history in Conversant: the product, its price and currency, and the dates of purchase, renewal, trial, and cancellation;
- your App Store country and language, and technical details such as the app and system version;
- the network (IP) address your device uses to connect, as with any internet service.
RevenueCat uses this information to provide its service to us: checking purchases with Apple, keeping your access up to date, and giving us aggregated reports, such as how many people start a free trial. Neither we nor RevenueCat use it to track you across other companies’ apps or websites, or for advertising. RevenueCat’s own practices are described in its privacy policy.
6Information Apple may share with us
If you have chosen, in your iPhone’s settings, to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give us anonymous, aggregated statistics, such as numbers of installations, sessions, and crashes, along with crash reports. These do not identify you.
If you test Conversant through TestFlight, Apple shares the feedback, screenshots, and crash reports you choose to send, along with the information TestFlight’s own terms describe.
7If you write to us
If you email us, or use Report a problem or Contact support in the app, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach. Problem reports also include details the app fills in for you, which you can read before sending: the lesson and its version, the app version, your iOS version, and your device model. Nothing is sent unless you send the email yourself.
We use these messages only to reply to you and to fix problems. Our email is delivered through Cloudflare’s email routing service and stored with our email provider. To confirm: name of the email provider.
8This website
conversantapp.com sets no cookies, uses no analytics, and loads nothing from other companies; even its fonts are served from our own site. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which, like any web host, processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type in order to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. We do not use that information to identify you.
9How we use information
We use the limited information described above to provide the app, to answer you, to fix problems, to provide the purchases you make, and to meet our legal obligations. We do not sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use it to track you, and we show no ads.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, our legal bases are: our legitimate interest in answering messages and keeping the app working; the performance of our contract with you, for purchases; and compliance with legal obligations, for records the law requires us to keep.
10Who receives information
We share information only with service providers that help us run Conversant, and only as this policy describes: Apple (the App Store, narration downloads, TestFlight, and developer analytics), Cloudflare (website hosting and email routing), our email provider, and, for purchases, RevenueCat.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others. If Conversant is ever merged or sold, this policy will continue to apply to the information we hold.
11How long we keep it
Information on your iPhone stays there until you delete it or the app.
We keep emails for as long as we need to deal with what you wrote about, and then for up to two years (to confirm) for our records, unless the law requires longer. Purchase records are kept by Apple and RevenueCat for as long as they are needed to provide your access and as the law requires.
12Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to receive a copy, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to withdraw any consent you have given. Residents of California and other U.S. states with privacy laws have the right to know, correct, and delete personal information, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share it, and we will not treat you differently for using any of these rights.
Most of what Conversant handles never leaves your iPhone, so you control it directly: deleting the app deletes it. For anything else, such as emails you have sent us, write to hello@conversantapp.com. We will reply within 30 days, or sooner if the law requires. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
13Children
Conversant is written for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.
14Security
Information on your iPhone is protected by the device’s own security, including its passcode and encryption. We take reasonable steps to protect the messages you send us, and limit access to the people who answer them.
15International users
We are based in the United States. If you write to us from another country, your message will be processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those where you live.
16Changes to this policy
If we change how Conversant handles information, we will update this policy and its date before the change takes effect and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or on this site.
